We spend almost one third of our day at the office, and even during our downtime we’re still thinking about our jobs. Wouldn’t it pay off to actually like what we do?
Sadly, that’s not always the case. According to the latest cover story from Live Happy magazine, only one percent of Americans love their jobs, and 70 percent are either unengaged or truly dislike their jobs. Deborah Heisz, the magazine’s editorial director, joined HuffPost Live host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani to discuss why these numbers are so poor and why it’s important to find happiness in the workplace.
“I think a lot of it has to do with how we approach work,” said Heisz. “Research shows that most people approach work as not a leisure activity, not something they’re engaged in. Work is something they do to fund other things. But what they don’t realize is that their attitude at work spills over into the other aspects of their life… So I don’t know how we got there, but I certainly know there are methods people can take to become engaged and become happier at work.”
When you find yourself feeling really stressed or unhappy, Heisz recommends practicing mindfulness meditation for a few minutes. She also suggests avoiding the negative talk that so often circulates in the office, and instead be the person who spreads positivity to work peers.
