Nikon has announced winners of its Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. The winning entries are full of beauty, often from unexpected sources. Micrographs of green-stained neurons derived from human skin cells (top image) and HeLa cells undergoing division, are a couple of the winners that should be particularly interesting to medical folks. But there are other items, such as cow dung and slime mold, that typically only work well in contemporary art installations. Here, seen under the microscope, they are inherently beautiful and attract rather than repulse.
